What would it take to get Firefox as the default browser on new PCs? Computer vendors can't remove Internet Explorer from Windows based PCs so it means they would have to support two different browsers. This costs more and doesn't benefit them.
The other problem is that there are still websites out there that only work in Internet Explorer. There is a great add-on that I use that lets you use the IE rendering engine to view IE only sites in a Firefox tab. It works great but you would have to teach users when and how to use it. Maybe if the add-on auto-detected sites that required the IE rendering engine it would solve this problem.
There's an interesting discussion going on about this topic on ZDnet.
